I have been working on Farcry 3 during the last 3 years, from pre-production until game release. During the time I have created 15+ prototype multi-player maps, (4 of them are included in final game, several are cancelled by direction change), and 1 coop map for DLC .
Below is some of the levels I have been working on from start to finish and some brief of the good prototype map.
Making of Temple

Temple is one of the Farcry 3 multi-player map. During the early iterations it’s been reviewed excellence both on gameplay and high potential visual quality. The map concept comes from temple of Ankor Wat located in Cambodia, which is also one of the major theme in FC3 single-player.

The courtyard area is the center piece of map, which naturally forms a lot of encounters. The center platform is stick to the north so player can have back covered for defense; the surrounding building was designed to 2 floors for interesting elevation.

During the making of FC3, I encountered a lot of design challenge which is not available in other games. One of the biggest challenge is “let the n00bs survive in the jungle”. By sticking the realistic, open jungle environment with lots of vegetations and organic rocks, the map needs to be designed carefully for player to navigate easily and fun to play with. Also during the production, we have to keep “fighting” with level artist to make sure the gamplay elements been well maintained.

Hideout

Hideout is a very farcry-ish map, features with a big shipwreck stranded on a rocky bay. The center of the map is formed of a epic rock arch, with a ruined temple under it. The pirates takes control the cavern and build a camp inside it.

Prototype Maps

Observatory is one of my earliest map in the project. Its innovated by the Mauna Kea Observatories in Hawaii. The screenshot map is gameplay-finished but finally get cancelled because of production reason.

This is an experimental project to show how much level designer can do without any human habitation props(houses, roads, camps, etc) During the maping I have tried many ideas to build unique locations(waterfall, cliff, special formation of rocks, hollowed tree trunk, etc)

This "Si-Fi" map is based on one of the early concept when we had a giant mining hole in the ocean in single-player. This map features a great vista, the play area is on the border of the mega structure, with the use of crane, container, dock, and other industrial facilities, this map comes both great visual and fun.
